Common questions about sex therapy for sexual trauma

What can sex therapy for sexual trauma help with?

Sex therapy for trauma may support people experiencing sexual difficulties as a result of past trauma, including avoidance of intimacy, pain during sex, low arousal, dissociation, intrusive thoughts, and challenges with trust or connection in relationships. Sessions are available to individuals and couples, online across Australia, with therapists trained in both EMDR and psychosexual approaches.

What is EMDR therapy for sexual trauma?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-informed therapy that may help people process distressing memories and reduce their impact on daily life and relationships. In sex therapy, EMDR may be used to address the ways past trauma is affecting sexual experiences, intimacy, or connection. Sessions are entirely talk-based, delivered online, and conducted at a pace that feels safe for you.

What happens in a session?

Sessions run for 50 minutes via secure video or telephone. There is no physical examination. A therapist will work with you to understand your experience, identify what feels most pressing, and support you to move forward at a pace that feels right. You do not have to share everything that's happened to you to heal from trauma. What you share is totally up to you and at your pace. EMDR may be introduced once a foundation of safety and trust has been established.

Can EMDR help with sexual difficulties caused by trauma?

EMDR may help people whose sexual difficulties are connected to past trauma, including sexual abuse, assault, or adverse sexual experiences. By working to process distressing memories, EMDR may reduce their impact on current sexual experiences and relationships. At Love Therapy Australia, EMDR is offered alongside psychosexual therapy by EMDRAA-registered therapists. No GP referral is needed.

Do I need to talk about the details of what happened to me?

No. Trauma-informed therapy, including EMDR, does not require you to describe traumatic events in detail. Therapists at Love Therapy Australia are trained to support you in processing trauma at your own pace, and a session will never push you beyond what feels safe. The focus is on reducing the impact of trauma, not on recounting it.
